Horizant Overview

Reviewed: June 19, 2012
Updated:

Horizant is a prescription medication used to treat adults with nerve pain caused by shingles. Shingles is a painful rash that is caused by the varicella-zoster virus, the virus that also causes chickenpox. Horizant is also used to treat restless legs syndrome.

Horizant belongs to a group of drugs called anticonvulsants and relieves nerve pain post shingles by changing the way the body senses pain. It is not known exactly how Horizant works to treat restless legs syndrome.

This medication comes in extended release tablets and is taken up to 2 times a day, depending on what is being treated. Take Horizant with food.

Do not cut, crush, or chew tablets. Swallow tablets whole.

Common side effects of Horizant include headache, dizziness, and drowsiness. Do not drive a car or operate heavy machinery until you know how this medication affects you.
